Coach JJ Rathnam

Coach JJ Rathnam is the Club Director of Maryland Volleyball Program. He is dedicated to overseeing the development of youth athletes at multiple levels, bringing his decades of experience as both a player and as a coach.

His volleyball journey began at Winston Churchill High School, where he played for the varsity team from 1990 to 1992. During this time, he also competed for CHAIKA Boys Club Volleyball and later went on to play for various CHRVA A/AA Men’s teams, as well as CYC and MVP 9Man.

Coach JJ’s coaching career spans over two decades, starting in 1999 with both boys and girls volleyball teams at Montgomery County High Schools. Early in his career, he led Montgomery Blair High School to a county championship in 2004 and earned the title of MCPS Boys Coach of the Year. As recent as 2024, Coach JJ led Winston Churchill High School’s Boys Varsity team to a county championship. And since 2014 he has served as the Girls Varsity Assistant Coach and Head Coach of the JV team at Churchill.

In addition to his work in high school volleyball, Coach JJ has been a part of the Maryland Volleyball Program since 2004, coaching and assisting various teams from U12 through U18. Coach JJ is also a former MPSSAA State Championship official and holds a USAV CAP I certification (now expired).

Outside of volleyball, Coach JJ works as an IT Specialist for the Defense Information Systems Agency. He is married with three children, and holds strong ties to his alma maters, Winston Churchill High School (Class of 1992)…Bulldog for Life!…and the University of Maryland (Class of 1998)…Fear the Turtle! Coach JJ continues to inspire the next generation of volleyball players through his leadership and passion for the sport.
