Tryouts: 2025-2026 Season

Introduction

The Maryland Volleyball Program (MVP) is a non-profit organization which provides opportunities for boys to compete in USA Volleyball Junior competitions at the local, regional, and national levels. MVP was established in 1986 and has competed in every Boys Junior National Championship since 1987.

Coaching Philosophy

Our program offers high-quality training that surpasses what is available through school systems, providing opportunities to compete at local, regional, and national levels. This competitive athletic experience fosters social development, supports mental and physical health, and instills values such as teamwork, responsibility, self-discipline, and self-motivation.

We emphasize a strong foundation in volleyball fundamentals, enabling participants to grow not only as athletes but also as individuals. With this foundation, we aim to inspire youth to continue playing volleyball well beyond their junior club years, embracing it as a lifelong sport.

Commitment

Participation in the MVP program requires a significant time and financial commitment. Practices begin in mid-September, tournaments start in November, and the season concludes with the AAU Boys National Championships in late June or early July (some teams may end their season on Memorial Day weekend). Each team will have 2–3 weekly practices. Position clinics will be offered to all team members. Around Thanksgiving, we will transition from position clinics to three weekly practices. This year, we will pause activities during the Montgomery County High School season. This adjustment ensures a balance of foundational skill development, opportunities to learn new positions, and sufficient team practice time to compete effectively.

AAU Membership and Age Group Definitions

AAU MEMBERSHIP

A youth member must register in the District of their bona fide residency, except as follows:

– A youth member who resides in the county of one district that a joins a county of another district and who attends school located in the adjoining county, will have the option of registering in either district.
– A youth member subject to a written joint legal custody arrangement, whose custodians reside in different districts should have the option of registering in either district.
– A bona fide student at an educational institution may be considered a resident of that district in which the institution is located.

ELIGIBILITY

A youth member may elect to participate in his or her district of bona fide residence, or a district that is geographically adjoined to that district.

Club attachment.  A youth member becomes attached to a club when he or she competes with that club in any AAU authorized event.

TRANSFERS

Transfers.   Athletes who transfer under the section are subject to national championship eligibility restrictions as adopted by the National Sport Committee and/or Volleyball Advisory Committee.  After a youth member becomes attached to a club he/she may only transfer to another club in the same sport as follows:

–  if the youth member has not competed in any AAU authorized events in that sport for a period of 60 days, no permission is necessary. *Volleyball Rule – High School season if between club seasons (I.E. Spring High School Season), will not count towards 60 days.
– If the representative of the club to which an athlete is attached, signed a release form permitting and immediate transfer.  (athlete to transfer under the section are subject to national championship eligibility restrictions as adopted by the National Sport Committee)
–  If the national sport committee determines, there is a good case to believe that the transfer is due to events outside the control of the athlete, or that the transfer serves in the best interest of the AAU.

AGE DIVISIONs

For the 2025-2026 season, AAU and USAV boys volleyball age divisions are determined by a player’s birth date relative to July 1, 2026. AAU age divisions range from 10U to 18U, with eligibility based on birth year . USAV follows a similar structure, with divisions from 8U to 18U (e.g., 18U: born on or after July 1, 2007, or in 12th grade or below; 14U: born on or after July 1, 2010, and not in a grade higher than 8th). Both organizations require proof of age and grade for certain divisions, and college participation disqualifies players from national events.

Always verify with the official websites, as age calculators or policies may have updates.
