Coach Erick Rivas is the Head Coach of MVP 16 Red. He began his volleyball journey at Walter Johnson (WJ) High School out of curiosity for the sport, and made the team his freshman year. First playing outside hitter, and eventually leading the team as setter in his Junior and Senior year. Coach Erick played for MVP from 1997-2000 in the 16s, 17s, and 18s division. His first year with MVP, the 16s team took 2nd place in the Gold division at Nationals. In college, he played 1.5 years for the University of Maryland Club Team as a setter. He took a break from volleyball to focus on his career and has returned to the game he loves. Over time, Coach Erick has found it natural to teach and mentor people at the professional level, and he started expanding that passion to teach, into the volleyball realm.
Over the past 3 years, Coach Erick has had experience coaching rec league volleyball for middle school aged kids, being invited to coach at No Panic Volleyball Club’s summer developmental clinic for 9-13 year olds, and is currently helping adults in one-on-one and group settings, improve their volleyball skills. Most recently, he helped as an assistant coach at the Pat Powers’ volleyball camp in Sterling, Virginia and is currently playing in two competitive volleyball leagues. Now, Coach Erick is excited to bring that passion and experience to the competitive side of club volleyball.
Coach Erick brings a philosophy of, “culture first” into his coaching/leadership style, and combines it with systems to make the game simpler for his players. The results from this approach has brought much success in his professional and volleyball experiences, and he’s looking forward to seeing how this upcoming season can provide tailored growth for each team member on the MVP 16 Red team.
In his professional life, Coach Erick leads and mentors a team of Accountants, focusing on financial reporting for various commercial real estate clients. As a former Accountant in the Public Accounting Sector, his awareness to see the day to day details, while also seeing how that influences the Investment and Asset Management side, has made him a go-to leader in the Life Sciences sector within commercial real estate.
As a native Marylander, Coach Erick is excited to be back as a contributor to the next wave of leaders and elite players at MVP and is appreciative to be coaching alongside his sister, Coach Amy Rivas.
